just finished killing the doll-like lady with swords. But man im using 2 handed and getting my ♥♥♥ handed against Kraken Cyclops. Any tips on this?

I'm playing as the standard strength-knight-build (20 lvl) and everything felt fine until that fight. My +3 mace damage was HORRIBLE. Was I SUPPOSED to use greatsword in this fight, or maybe there was some kind of a trick that I missed?
